WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY?
A learning disability is a neurological difference which ultimately affects one's ability to learn and mentally develop in traditional ways. An LD cannot be cured no “fixed”, but it can be mitigated with the right resources. Even if two people have the same LD diagnosis, they may experience that LD differently.
According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, 1 in 5 people in the US have some form of an LD. But the presence of an LD does not make a person any less smart nor capable. It just means their brain is wired to learn things differently than the average learner.
In non-scientific words, a learning disability can mean a lifetime of challenges that can affect one’s life. An LD can complicate one's learning process and elongate the time it takes for them to complete average educational-related milestones, such as reading. Nonetheless, the presence of a learning disability in someone does not take away their accountability or their smarts. Those with an LD often have unique and creative ways of looking at the world that average learners don’t have. An LD is simply a bump in the road that can be overcome with a lot of hard work.
